Water softeners and filters for the hard water of the Yucatán Peninsula
With hardness of 360–492 mg/L as CaCO₃ in the Cancún Hotel Zone, scale clogs water heaters, boilers, shower heads and ice machines. We design, install and maintain the equipment, and sell the spare parts.
Which equipment do you need?
These stages almost always run in series: first the multimedia filter removes solids, then the carbon removes chlorine and odor, and finally the softener removes hardness.
| Equipment | What it removes | Where it is used in a hotel | Media replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multimedia filter | Sand, silt and solids down to 10–15 microns | Cistern inlet, reverse osmosis pretreatment | Sand and gravel: every 3 to 5 years |
| Activated carbon | Chlorine, organic matter, odor and taste | Kitchen water, ice machines, ahead of reverse osmosis | Every 12 to 18 months |
| Water softener | Calcium and magnesium (hardness) | Water heaters, boilers, laundry, cooling towers | Resin: every 4 to 5 years |
Reference frequencies: they depend on the feed water quality and consumption; testing confirms them.
For hotels
Scale is expensive where you can’t see it- Water heaters and boilers that burn more gas because of the scale
- Ice machines that make cloudy ice or shut down
- Shower heads and faucets with scale that guests can see
- Laundry that uses more detergent and wears out the linen
Before we quote
We test your water firstThe size of the softener depends on the actual hardness and the daily consumption. A hardness test confirms the value of your well or municipal supply, and the warranty is based on that figure. From assessment to maintenance

Diagnosis
Water problems we solve with filtration
We address the most common industrial water supply problems that affect your machinery and processes.
Cloudy water
Removal of sediment, sand and suspended solids that affect clarity.
Scale
Treatment of hardness and mineral deposits in boilers and cooling towers.
Clogged piping
Prevention of heavy scaling that reduces flow and damages your distribution systems.

Water softeners in Cancún and the Riviera Maya
The peninsula’s karst aquifer delivers very hard water. Without softening, that calcium and magnesium turns into scale in boilers, water heaters, cooling towers and laundry equipment.
Selection and sizing
We measure the hardness of your water and size the ion-exchange softener to your consumption and the equipment it must protect.
Installation and maintenance
We install and maintain water softeners in hotels, condominiums and industry, with Fleck and Clack valves, fiberglass tanks and digital controls.
Boilers and hot water
Softened water is the first requirement for boiler feedwater and for a hotel’s hot water systems.
Industrial filtration: frequently asked questions
Do you service equipment you did not install?
Yes. We inspect the system, give you a report on the valves and filter media, and quote the repair, media replacement or new equipment.
How often should filter media be replaced?
It depends on the media and the quality of the feed water. Sand and gravel beds last 3 to 5 years, activated carbon is replaced every 12 to 18 months (backwashing does not regenerate it), and softener resins last 4 to 5 years with proper salt regeneration.
What is the difference between multimedia filtration and activated carbon?
Multimedia filtration retains suspended solids (sand, silt, sediment) in layers of different grain sizes. Activated carbon adsorbs dissolved chemical compounds such as chlorine, organic matter, odors and tastes. They are usually installed in series: multimedia first, then activated carbon.
How hard is the water in Cancún, and when do you need a water softener?
In our tests of untreated water in the Cancún Hotel Zone, hardness was 360–492 mg/L as CaCO₃ (8 samples). At that level, boilers, water heaters, cooling towers and laundry equipment need softening to prevent scale. A hardness test of your water confirms the value at your site.
Do I need a water softener if I already have multimedia filtration?
Yes, if your water is hard (high in calcium and magnesium). Multimedia filtration only removes solid particles, not dissolved minerals. A softener is essential to protect boilers, cooling towers and laundry equipment from scale.
What is backwashing, and how often should it be done?
Backwashing reverses the flow through the filter media to loosen and flush out trapped particles. It is scheduled automatically by volume treated or elapsed time, typically every 24 to 72 hours, depending on the solids load of the water.
Can a filtration system protect my reverse osmosis membranes?
Yes. Pretreatment with multimedia filtration and activated carbon is essential to protect reverse osmosis membranes. Multimedia lowers the silt density index (SDI), and activated carbon removes the residual chlorine that irreversibly damages polyamide membranes.
What kind of salt is used to regenerate a water softener?
High-purity salt in crystals or pellets (at least 99.5% NaCl), also called solar salt or softener salt. Never use table salt, unrefined sea salt or iodized salt: their impurities damage the ion-exchange resin. Regeneration is scheduled automatically every 24 hours or by volume treated, typically every 8,500 gallons (about 32,000 L).
How does a metering pump work, and why is it needed?
A metering pump injects precise amounts of chemical into the water system, continuously or in proportion to flow. It uses a motor-driven diaphragm with automatic priming and chemical-resistant materials. It is essential to keep the right concentration of corrosion inhibitors, biocides, chlorine and other treatment products, so the system stays protected.
